Happy feet “For most of us, feet are not
something we tend to think about too much. In fact many of us find feet, even our own, the least favourite part of the human body. This attitude unfortunately has the effect of encouraging some neglect in the care our feet deserve. Our feet really do have a vital role to play in the overall health of the rest of our body. It was the Greek philosopher Socrates who said, “When our feet hurt, we hurt all over” and that statement is as true today
as it was then. We must include the health of our feet in the same way we follow rules for dental care, exercise and nutritional considerations in planning a programme of achieving holistic health and maintenance for the whole body. Lack of foot care can result in many problems that affect the rest of our body and indeed the way we live our lives. It may simply be a fungal condition that spreads from the feet, but it could be far more serious. Possibly two thirds
or more of diabetic amputations would not have occurred if simple foot checks and care procedures were followed. Mobility in the elderly is also a major problem, and one that can be markedly improved if a foot care programme is followed. These are just a few examples of the results of neglect.
Masterpiece of engineering Leonardo da Vinci said, ‘The feet are a masterpiece on engineering and a
work of art’ Well I am not attempting to convince you that he was right about them being a work of art, but as regards to their being a masterpiece of engineering, there can be no doubt he was right. Out of the 206 bones in the human skeleton, over a quarter are found in the feet: 26 in each foot to be precise. Each foot has 33 joints, 20 muscles, and over 100 ligaments that work in perfect harmony, transporting you with ease over terrain that is constantly
changing. This goes on without any mental effort on your part. Half the time, the whole of your body weight rests on just one foot, with half being borne by the ball of your foot. So what can we do to improve and maintain the health of our feet?..” The article outlines the various ways you can keep your feet in good condition, and discusses ways of dealing with some of the problems that may
arise. In the event that you need to see a qualified chiropodist or podiatrist, please see the website for the Health Professions Council (HPC) at www.hpc-uk.org. |
