From midwifery to marjarisana “I often wonder how and why individuals choose their paths through life. I am a ‘gut reaction’ person. If it feels right then that’s the direction I take. My first career decision was made whilst at primary school. I loved the idea of hospitals and was going to be a nurse. My mother used to
recount how, at the age of six, I firmly lodged a bead up my nose in order to get a trip to the local A & E department as I was desperate to go to hospital! I began nurse training in the late 1960s, at the end of which I felt there was a gap in my knowledge as I hadn’t learnt how to deliver a baby, so midwifery training followed. As the course progressed, I felt I had really found my niche in life and went on to work as a midwife and then a midwife tutor for about 12 years in all.
In 1977 a friend persuaded me to go to a Yoga class with her just to get fit. I enjoyed the classes and, of course, gained much more than just becoming physically fitter. To my amazement, one evening my Yoga teacher asked if I might consider Yoga teacher training. I dismissed the suggestion instantly but a seed had been sown...”
