1000 peace women across the globe

1000-peace-women
“Several women have won Nobel Peace Prizes for their life-long social contributions: Jane Adams (US, 1931),Emily Balch (US, 1946), Mother Teresa (India, 1979), Aung San Suu Kyi (Burma, 1992), Jodi Williams of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (US, 1997), Shirin Ebady (Iran, 2003) and Wangari Matthai (Kenya, 2004).
In January 2005, a committee of intellectuals and activists in Switzerland nominated 1,000 women across the world for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. The result is this thick (over 2,000 pages) volume. It is an impressive book, both in concept and in production. It is an international assembly of information on 1,000 women active in various fields to help their society and humanity. The cast is diverse - women working in human rights, gender democracy, sexual violence, minorities and indigenous peoples, workers’ rights, racial discrimination, justice, poverty, welfare, world peace, health, literacy and education, and the environment. The nominees come from more than 150 countries, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, and mostly (justifiably on population size) from the world’s two most populous nations, China and India. These are ordinary citizens doing extraordinary work.”

The article, written by Dr Sorkhabi, continues the review further, giving examples.
