Yoga for ‘real’ women

real-01“Plus size women face many challenges on a daily basis simply because of our size. Many of us consequently shut down and regard our bodies as a source of frustration and embarrassment. Some of us experience social ostracism for not conforming to the standards of what is considered beautiful in the prevailing culture. Many of us have to struggle to find nice clothing that fits, to fit into seats on airplanes and public transportation, to feel that we belong in a fitness class full of smaller bodies. These challenges are surmountable when we know we can master a tricky Yoga pose. One small victory over doubt and muscle fatigue can snowball into standing taller, prouder, and being unafraid to be seen. It takes hard work to challenge yourself through a physical discipline like Yoga, but the rewards are great...
My body and maybe yours doesn’t look like the bodies of lots of Yoga practitioners. If I pretend that I don’t have ample breasts or a belly, I will be uncomfortable in some Yoga poses - for example, compressing my breasts in a low lunge. Acknowledging the truth about my body shape lets me make modifications for my comfort and safety. By making an honest account of my level of fitness, I am able to avoid moves that I am not ready to practise yet and thereby avoid potential injury...”
