New approaches to cancer

“As a physician since 1969, I spend time noticing the evolution of Western medical practice and I am thrilled with the advances in the technological treatments for cancer and heart disease. The coming use of genetic information for diagnosis and treatment will be quite amazing. More painful is the shrinking time given to building relationships between caregivers and people suffering from disease. People must now take increased responsibility for their own wellness.
A key element of that responsibility is to gain and use the knowledge of how nutrition impacts health...”

This article, written by Dr Harvey Zarren, continues to discuss the positive effect diet, and in particular vegan nutrition, can have not only on cancer treatment and prevention, but also on other diseases such osteoporosis and heart problems.

Self help cancer

“Pharmaceuticals vs Nutriceuticals

These notes were initially prepared at the request of medical and nursing staff and others, some weeks after I had had an operation for the removal of a colon cancer, and while undergoing chemotherapy in case any cancer cells had gone AWOL. There had been some minimal escape of cancer cells into lymph nodes (3 out of 17) but no other tumours had been picked up by a CT scan.
When I returned home from hospital, with the help of friends, I started doing some internet research on cancer, and especially colon cancer. I was amazed to discover that despite the billions of pounds/euros/dollars etc spent on cancer research, and many advances in understanding the numerous variants of the disease, the standard treatment for my stage of colon cancer is still a drug(fluorouracil, also called 6FU) that has been in use for more than 40 years, has uncomfortable side effects, and which only increases the chances of survival after five years by 6-10%.
Investigating some of the more recent research, I was further surprised to discover how much medical research had been done into naturally available substances (generally from plants, mushrooms etc) which possess cancer preventative, cancer inhibiting and even cancer curative properties. But despite this research, these substances (increasingly known as nutriceuticals) are not available as a part of standard medical treatment in the West...”

Written by John Davidson, Self help cancer continues to discuss why so many naturally occurring anti-cancer substances appear to be ignored in the developed world, and to make suggestions as to how the problems may be avoided. A list of general cancer help sites follows this article on Page 21 of Yoga & Health for March 2006.
