Yoga for children with autismcat pose

After observing first hand the difficulties that affect children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASDs), we thought Yoga could provide a good basis for such children to get in touch with their bodies and so chose poses which would most meet the unique needs of children with ASDs. Additionally, we found that visualisations to be used with the poses helped engage the mind and relax the body.
There has been some medical research to show the benefits of Yoga and yogic breathing. Yogic breathing helps slow cardiovascular rhythms (Bernardi et al, 2001) and certain types may also improve spatial memory tasks (Naveen et al, 1997). Yoga may also ameliorate symptoms of asthma (Kharnam et al, 1996). Research suggests that in addition, Yoga can be effective in treating symptoms of mental health disorders (Shannahoff-Khalso & Becket, 1996) and in the treatment of neurological disorders (Patanjwani et al, 1997). Yoga has also been shown to icrease the motor performance of schoolchildren (Telles wt al, 1993). More medical research is needed to show the physiological and mental benefits of practising Yoga...
The physical symptoms of ASDs, while seemingly slight, may drastically impair well-being and health. Such children need an appropriate and enjoyable physical programme. The practice of Yoga assists with both balance and strength... The resulting muscle strength and balance control can improve coordination. When poses are practised consistently, a child will feel more comfortable in his or her body which can carry over into other areas of their life.autism-02
Fine motor skills such as writing or cutting with scissors are also a challenge to a child with an ASD. The problem of low muscle tone extends into the hands and fingers. Yoga emphasises being in tune with the entire body, including the hands and feet. This emphasis can be enhanced by the use of visualisations.
Another prevalent feature is that children with ASD have many sensory issues. for example, they are often extremely sensitive to bright lights...
Yoga can help address such issues. Firstly the physical practice soothes the nervous system, providing poses of flowing movements that allow energy to be released from the body. An overburdened sensory system can thus be calmed and quietened...”

The article continues to discuss the various ways Yoga can help children with ASDs, and to outline a simple but useful pose.
