Phoenix Prison Trust
The Prison Phoenix Trust, which was founded in 1998 by Ann Wetherall, encourages prisoners in the UK in their spiritual welfare through the practices of meditation and yoga, working with silence and the breath. We train qualified yoga teachers for work in prisons, and establish them in substance mis-use, anger management and education programmes. We help prisoners and prison to maintain their daily practice with weekly classes in prisons all over the UK and Eire, through correspondence, free resource books and CD's, and a quarterly newsletter written mostly by inmates.
When inmates regularly practice yoga and meditation, they gradually lose a lifetime sense of separateness. They begin to acknowledge the existence of the world around them and recognise the interdependence of humanity. This enables them to begin to take responsibility for their actions and dissolve old barriers to social interaction. When they learn to form nourishing relationships with others and the natural world, they are able to improve their physical and mental health and reduce, or sometimes even relinquish, medication, drugs and violent impulses. Research shows yoga practitioners in prison are motivated to learn, and their improved skills fit them more appropriately for employment.
